The threshold Changed.YouTube will raise the entry requirements for its Partner Program (YPP) for new creators from February 1, 2027. The long-form threshold doubles from 4,000 to 8,000 watch hours. Creators already in the program keep their status. Moral of this story, if YouTube monetization is part of your plan, the runway just got longer.

What is changing

YouTube announced the changes on August 10, 2026. Amjad Hanif, YouTube’s vice president of creator product, presented the increase as a way to make sure creators earn meaningful income. Current thresholds apply through January 31, 2027.

From February 1, 2027, new creators need 1,000 subscribers and one of the following:

  • 8,000 qualified watch hours in the previous 365 days, up from 4,000 watch hours in 12 months.
  • 20 million qualified Shorts views in the previous 90 days.

The subscriber requirement is unchanged. Fan-funding features, which are available at a lower tier of 500 subscribers and 3,000 watch hours, are also unchanged.

Existing members

Creators already in the Partner Program are grandfathered and keep their partnership status. They must review and accept updated agreement terms by January 31, 2027.

What it means

Analysis: A higher threshold lengthens the time a new channel goes without access to YouTube’s advertising revenue share. Creators who rely on the program for early income have more reason to build other revenue streams alongside it, such as memberships, direct sales and sponsorships. The change does not affect income from sources outside the Partner Program. Attention Isn’t Income covers platform dependence and revenue concentration.
